Three Reasons Why You Should Do Cross Training
Cross training doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to hop on one of those elliptical cross trainers at the gym. Cross training in fact, means that you're going to be mixing up your exercise routines and adding or combining some new ones to your workout to shake things up.
Your body tends to get used to the type of activity you do repetitively everyday. And when this happens, the effectiveness of your workout will gradually decrease over time if you don't do anything about it. If you would consider your body to be on a learning curve for your workout, doing the same exercise routine for a ridiculously long period of time like six months, would have you ending up on a plateau in your learning curve. So how can we let our bodies experience a more intense and effective workout? Do some cross training.
1. Cross training will expose you to different types of activities.
Exposing yourself to different types of physical exercise means that you tend to use different muscle groups for different exercises. Take for example going on a treadmill. You are definitely going to be using your leg strength to support your body and keep running. With rowing on the other hand, you're going to have to depend on your upper body strength to get a good work out. And with wall climbing, well you're going to need all the strength you can get – upper body and lower body strength combined.
What makes cross training better than routine exercises? Your body is challenged more since you're going to be performing more tasks than just hopping on a treadmill for thirty minutes.
2. Cross training will shorten exercise times for different workout regimens.
If you work out on more than just one exercise platform say using a rowing machine, elliptical cross trainer, treadmill, and stationary cycle instead of just using the treadmill that would mean that you can shorten the lengths of time you use for an exercise. Let's say you allocate about an hour's worth of your time strictly devoted to cardio exercise. Which do you think is less of a bore? An hour on the treadmill or fifteen minutes each on a treadmill and three other cardio machines of your choice? If you're the type that gets easily bored, this type of workout is definitely the right one for you.
3. The combinations are endless.
The beauty about cross training is that you can decide on mixing up different forms of exercise to contribute to the increased overall level of exercise that you will be giving your body. Cross training doesn't have to be limited to cardio machines. In fact, you can mix it up even more by adding some weight training to the equation or attending some yoga classes afterwards. Take advantage of the many services that your gym has to offer! You'll see the benefits of cross training after quite a while. Give it some thought and try it out whenever you can.
